Foursight

Four-in-a-row is simple, social and immediately recognisable, yet it is commonly produced as a plastic toy designed to be stored away.

Foursight reworks the game as an object with a more permanent place in domestic and social spaces. An open steel frame reveals the changing arrangement of pieces, while linked double and triple tokens introduce new choices within the familiar rules.

The objective remains familiar: connect four pieces in any direction. On each turn, however, a player can place a conventional single token or commit one of their limited double or triple pieces. A linked token can accelerate a sequence, block an opponent or reshape several parts of the board at once.

Once these larger pieces have been played, they cannot be recovered. Their value therefore depends on timing. A move is no longer only about choosing a position; it is also a decision about how much of a limited advantage to use.

This additional choice expands the strategy without making the game difficult to learn.

The linked double and triple pieces were developed alongside the open grid, ensuring that the new tactical possibilities remained compatible with the familiar drop-in interaction. Full-scale prototyping helped establish the spacing between rods, the profile of the tokens and the curved base geometry. These elements were refined together so that the pieces could move clearly through the frame while the object remained stable and visually balanced. Each bent steel rod performs three roles: guiding the pieces, supporting the frame and forming its freestanding base. Repeating this element creates a clear front-facing grid and a more sculptural side profile. The tokens were assembled from laser-cut layers to give them depth and a defined edge. Blue and translucent white distinguish the two players, while connected outlines identify the double and triple pieces. The completed prototype moves comfortably between a shelf, table, bar or outdoor setting—remaining present as an object before, during and after play.
